ENEA set up a portable laser against food frauds

The researchers of the METROFOOD-IT Operating Unit ENEA3 set up FoodSensor, a portable laser system based on photoacoustic laser spectroscopy to identify food frauds in less than 5 minutes. The device, easy-to-use and portable like a hand-case, enable to detect sophistications directly on a small sample amount of food without any pretreatment nor chemical reagents. The device has been used for studies on saffron, milk, olive oil, rice, fruit juices and oregano, which allowed the ENEA researchers to develop also a dedicated database including the absorption spectra characteristics for each sample.
