Strengthening of the Italian Research Infrastructure for Metrology and Open Access Data in support to the Agrifood
Festival Green&Blue 2026
The fifth edition of the Green&Blue Festival, held at the Leonardo da Vinci Museum of Science and Technology in Milan from June 4 to 6, has come to a close. The event featured a rich programme of talks, workshops, children’s activities, and evening shows, all centred on collective responsibility and shared solutions to address the climate crisis, with a strong focus on communities, institutions, and businesses as key drivers of change in an increasingly complex and interconnected world. ENEA was also invited to take part in the event through the contribution of Dr. Claudia Zoani, researcher in the Sustainable Agri-Food Systems Division and coordinator of the European Research Infrastructure METROFOOD-RI and its national node METROFOOD-IT, funded under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP). Her talk, entitled “The Future of Food: If It Cannot Be Measured, It Cannot Be Sustainable”, highlighted the critical challenges related to food
sustainability, with particular emphasis on the reliability of data. In the absence of robust data, it becomes difficult to assess whether a product, a process, or an entire supply chain is truly sustainable. Quality, sustainability, and traceability are now key concepts in the narrative around food, but without shared tools they risk remaining promises that are difficult to compare and verify. It is precisely from this need that METROFOOD-IT was created. Coordinated by ENEA and strengthened through NRRP funding, the project provides laboratories, expertise, and advanced services to support businesses, research, and institutions in building more sustainable, resilient, and transparent food supply chains.
“Measuring means better understanding the environmental impact of production, ensuring authenticity and food safety, enhancing best practices, and strengthening the relationship of trust between producers and consumers. In an increasingly complex agri-food system, sustainability cannot be the result of isolated actions: it is a shared responsibility involving the entire supply chain, and it can only be built on reliable and shared data,” concluded Dr. Zoani.
