ENEA studies traceability of olives
The researchers of the METROFOOD-IT Operating Units ENEA2 and ENEA3 set up a methodology for verifying the authenticity of extra-virgin olive oil by tracing the geographical origin of olives based on the elemental content. The results have been published in the open access journal ‘Foods’ (https://www.mdpi.com/2304-8158/11/8/1085).
The study has been conducted on thirty seven samples of olives and olive leaves from eleven cultivars grown in two different production areas in the Lazio region. The ENEA team of the Casaccia Research Center (ENEA2) applied high-sensitivity analytical techniques enabling the quantification of trace and ultra-trace elements, in combination with a portable device based on laser photoacoustic spectroscopy developed in the laboratories of the Frascati Research Center (ENEA3).
